The Greenbush Line Rebuilding Begins Again

September 22, 2003

After seven months of hesitation, as of September 22, 2003, the Commonwealth and the MBTA have finally renewed their commitment to restoring rail passenger service to the historic South Shore. This service, when completed, will substantially ease the commute to Boston for residents of these communities which, in turn, will increase property values and make driving easier for those who choose not to travel by rail.

The photographs contained on the following pages depict that state of the property as of Thursday September 25, 2003. We hope to update each of these photographs two or or three times during the construction process. The photos are relatively large so be patient while each page loads in your browser.

At least a couple of the photographs on the following pages have been recently republished by the folks who run the National Corridors Initiative web site. Their web site is an excellent source of information regarding not just the Greenbush line but ongoing passenger rail issues throughout North America. (While they initially attributed one photograph to the MBTA (!!!), they were responsive in correcting this when I contacted them.)

Additional information on on the status the Greenbush project can be found at:

We are more than happy to grant unlimited non-commercial republication rights to any of the photographs at this website provided that (a) you ask us first and (b) you indicate the source of the photograph as being railroadnews.com when you republish it.

For those interested in the history of the Greenbush line, I highly recommend the History of Greenbush Rail Line compiled by Thomas J. Humphrey. Note in particular the period photograph of Kingston's Summer Street station with the northbound track angling off to the right headed toward Duxbury and Greenbush. A period photograph showing roughly the same view of the station is available at an excellent website devoted to recording images of Railroad Stations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts

Click here for photographs (including a brief movie) from the opening day of service on the restored Old Colony line to Kingston (including more pictures of Kingston's Summer Street station).
